Dorothy Sponsler, 96 of Aledo, died Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Genesis Senior Living, Aledo. A Celebration of Dorothy’s life will be Thursday at 10:30 AM at the First Baptist Church, Aledo, with the Rev. Luke Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 to 7:30 PM at Speer Funeral Home, where an Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:30 PM. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Aledo, Aledo Order of the Eastern Star #126, or Mercer County 4-H Federation. Dorothy Ann was born on February 13, 1918 in Wichita, Kansas to Earl & Jennie (Richardson) Goodrich. She married Robert Lewis Sponsler on September 14, 1957 in Wichita, Kansas. He preceded her in death on November 7, 1987. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother above all. She enjoyed being a farm wife and helping her husband on the family farm near Seaton. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and sharing her talents with 4-H children. Dorothy was a very giving person, always sewing, making a quilt, holiday item or something to treasure. She was also a talented organist and pianist and played for the First Baptist Church and other churches in the area. In the 1950’s she was a telephone operator for both Southwestern Bell and SA Long Telephone Companies. She was a member of the Seaton Order of the Eastern Star and later the Aledo Order, #126, where she held the office of Grand Representative of Ohio in Illinois. Those who will cherish Dorothy’s memory include her son and daughter-in-law: J. Michael & Kathy Sponsler of Aledo; Grandchildren: Amy Sponsler of Rochester, NY; and Gina & Paul Young and their family, John-Michael, Mikayla and Robert Paul, all of Viola. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son in infancy, brother, Clarence Goodrich and sisters; Vesta Arnold and Gladys Blackwelder.
