Allen H. Gustafson

Graveside services for Allen Gustafson, 87 of Viola will be Saturday at 12:00 PM at Aledo Cemetery, with Military Honors by the Mercer County VFW Post #1571. Visitation is Saturday from 10 to 11:30 at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Charity of your choice. Allen died Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Aledo Rehab and Healthcare Center. Allen was born September 28, 1927 in rural Aledo to John & Anna (Erickson) Gustafson. He married Ardith Bodeen on July 11, 1976 in Nashua, Iowa. Allen graduated from Aledo High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, receiving the Purple Heart. Allen worked at the Weapons Command at the Rock Island Arsenal for 34 years, retiring on September 28, 1982. After retirement, he farmed for several years. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, traveling and winters in Florida. Allen is survived by his wife, Ardith; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra & Glenn Miller of East Moline and Susan & Robert Wientzen of Boulder, CO; a sister, Ruth Thomson; and 4 grandchildren: Tara, Grant, Alex & Curtis. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers, Virgil, Raymond, Evart and Robert.
