Dr. Stanley Mills

Dr. Stanley D Mills met his Savior on October 9, 2023. He was the 3rd son of Martin L & Gazelle E (LaBounty) Mills, born in Des Moines, IA, on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1933. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of 55 years.
He is leaving behind 3 children: Stephen (Alice), David (Tammy), and Rachel (Mike); 8 grandchildren: Katarina, Maddie, Marty, Corinne, Christopher, Katie, Parker, and Wiley; and a brother: Harold (Shirley) Mills.
Preceding him in death were his parents and an older brother, Richard, and his wife, JoAnn.
The family moved to Joy, IL, in 1942. He graduated from Joy High School in 1951.
Dr. Stan received his medical degrees from the University of Iowa and fulfilled his military duty with the Coast Guard serving Havasu Tribe in the Grand Canyon. He started practicing surgery with Dr. Lawson Tate in Banner Elk, North Carolina, until 1974. The family moved to Worthington, MN. In 1986, they moved to Haiti for 3 years, then to Tahlequah, OK, for 2 years. In 1991 the family moved back to Crossnore, NC, to work with Dr. Bill Tate until Dr. Stan’s retirement in 1999.
After retiring from practice, Dr. Stan traveled with Samaritan's Purse to many mission hospitals including Afghanistan, Papau New Guinea, Kenya, and Ecuador. He was an Elder for Frank Presbyterian Church in Newland, NC. He enjoyed his many hobbies after retirement: woodworking, photography, and astronomy, but what he enjoyed the most was Barbershop singing in choruses and quartets.
Funeral Services will be held on October 21, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. A memorial service will be at Reins-Sturdivant in NC on November 18, 2023, beginning at 2 p.m.
