Ellen A. Sunken, 75 of Aledo, died Saturday October 26, 2019, at Genesis Medical Center. Private family services will be held with burial in Aledo Cemetery. Speer Funeral Home, Aledo, is assisting the family. Condolences may be left at speerfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to the Apollo Care Fund or to KCCDD (Knox County Council for Developmentally Disabled).


Ellen Ann was born on February 13, 1944 in Rock Island, Illinois to Stanley & Isabel (Flaherty) Wynne. She married Hans H. Sunken on August 6, 1966 in Polo, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 18, 2014.


Ellen loved working with children. She was a Speech Pathologist and Second grade teacher with the Aledo School district, starting out in the Country Schools and retiring from Apollo Elementary. Even after retirement she would go back to help because she loved the children.
Ellen had a knack for decorating her home and entertaining her circle of friends and family. She cherished the time spent with them all. She enjoyed collecting antiques and quilting. She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.


Those left to cherish Ellen’s memory include her children and spouses: Brad & Colette Sunken of Aledo and Keri & Darrin Rursch of Reynolds; Granddaughters, Ella & Amelia Rursch and Siblings and spouses: Dan & Julie Wynne of Galesburg; Jane Wynne of Knoxville; Marti & Lou Maciel of Galesburg; Kathy & Tom Schwab of Rochester, MN and Cindy & Ken Becraft of Knoxville. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a special brother, Joe Wynne.
