Henry "Hank" D. Allan

Henry David Allan, (Hank) passed away peacefully on December 14, 2017, surrounded by family in Aledo, IL. Hank was born in Gillespie, IL, on May 29, 1930. An only son, he was a Boy Scout and a 1948 graduate of Gillespie High School. He married the former Betty J. Coe, a lab technician on March 23, 1952. Hank started his career as a mold polisher at Owens-Illinois Glass Company and was promoted to quality control manager for the Godfrey Plant. He loved his work and the people he worked with. When not working, Hank camped across America with his family and taught his daughters how to fix things. After over 42 years of service, Hank retired at age 61. Hank had four grandchildren and they became his favorite hobby. Hank and Betty were members of the Christian Church, Godfrey, IL, where he was an Elder. After 54 years in Alton, they went to live with their daughter, Joanne's family in St. Joseph and in Aledo IL, where their son-in-law serves as Pastor of the Aledo United Methodist Church and where they are members. In 2016, they moved to Brookstone assisted living nearby. Married over 65 years, last September, Hank was moved to Genesis Senior Living nursing home, as he battled dementia. The family is so grateful for the love, kindness and support from their churches, Brookstone, Genesis Senior Living, the Hospice program, and many other kind-hearted souls. Hank was preceded in death by his father, James Hunter Allan and his mother, Mary Whiteside McChristie of Scotland and Gillespie, IL. Hank is survived by his wife, Betty and his two daughters, Janice Allan Fuchs, Laguna Niguel, CA and Joanne Allan Harris, Aledo, IL, their husbands, Paul M. Fuchs and the Reverend Mark N. Harris, his grandchildren, Samuel Allan Harris, Chicago, IL, Paul Allan Fuchs, San Diego, CA, Olivia Mary Fuchs, San Diego, CA and Hunter Riley Harris, Aledo, IL as well as many other family members.A Celebration of Life Service will take place at the Aledo United Methodist Church on January 13, 2017, at 10:30 AM.Visitation will begin at 9 am prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Aledo UMC or practice random acts of kindness as Hank had done throughout his well lived life. Speer Funeral Home, Aledo, IL is handling arrangements and condolences may be left at speerfuneralhome.com.
