Funeral services for William E. Smock, 78 of Aledo, will be Thursday, March 3rd at 10:00 AM at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Graveside services will be at Rose Lawn Cemetery, Moline, Illinois at 2:00 PM on Thursday. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. The family asks that everyone wear their favorite Illini or Yankee gear. Memorials may be made to the Smock Family or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Bill died on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Mercer Manor, Aledo.
William Edgar was born on July 3, 1943, in Moline, Illinois to Edgar Lee & Sarah Ellen (Smith) Smock. He married Ruth Holcomb on June 22, 1962, in Andalusia, Illinois.
Bill retired from Bill Smock Insurance in 2005 in Aledo. Previously he had worked with Farmall and John Hancock Insurance. He loved sports and followed all local athletics, especially his grandchildren’s games. He enjoyed playing and coaching men’s softball and was inducted into the Quad City Senior Softball Hall of Fame in 2016. Bill was a lifelong New York Yankee and University of Illinois Fan. He was also a talented guitarist and his band even played for John F. Kennedy. Bill loved his dogs, granddogs and was a former board member for the Brown Dog Foundation.
Cherishing Bill’s memory include his wife of 59 years, Ruth; children and spouses: Cindy and Lonnie Maynard of Aledo; Julie Oary of Aledo; Carol Smock of Carlsbad, CA; Angela & Darin Ward of East Moline; Bill & Amber Smock of Aledo; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; Siblings and spouses: Jim & Mickie Smock of Moline and Bonnie & Glen Berkinbile of Bettendorf. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Linda Bull and Paul and Anthony Nagovan.
